Family Picnic at the Peck
On Sunday, September 27, the Lombard Historical Society will host “Picnic at the Peck” from noon to 3pm at the Sheldon Peck Homestead – 355 E. Parkside. The event is inspired by the “picnics at the Grove” that Sheldon and Harriet Peck hosted in the mid-1800's. Chicago city-dwellers were invited to take the train out west to experience the fresh air and happy times at the homestead (then located in Babcock’s Grove). These were also alcohol-free events, as the Pecks were devoted members of the Temperance Movement.
This year’s picnic is also a family-friendly affair with games and activities. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and basket for picnicking; light refreshments will provided by the historical society. At 2pm there will be a short presentation on the site’s national award winning Underground Railroad exhibit. The day’s entertainment and events are free and open to the public.
The Lombard Historical Society operates The Victorian Cottage Museum at 23 W. Maple Street and the Sheldon Peck Homestead at 355 E. Parkside. For more information on the Lombard Historical Society please call 630-629-1885 or visit lombardhistory.org.
