Location is a key factor in nearly all business decisions yet spatial data is seldom well managed or even understood. There is much more to business geographics than target marketing by ZIP code. Allocating sales territories, location analysis and site suitability, defining trade and service areas, delivery route optimization, and assessing market potential—these are just a few examples of the many ways that businesses of any size can put spatial data to work. This presentation will provide an overview of business applications of GIS, discuss the availability of spatial data and software tools, as well as describe the skills needed to implement GIS effectively in a business environment.
